As a teenager, Robert would accompany his Dad on shoots of sporting events. Robert's job was to carry the cameras for the paper's photographers. At half-time he would run the film to the helicopter so the photos would make the deadlines.
As a bonus for schlepping gear and running film, Robert was given a Nikon F with a 180 mm lens and allowed to submit his film with the other photographers. This landed one of his photos, taken at a University of Georgia football game, on the front page of the sports section in 1979 at the age of 13. Robert comments with a reminiscent smile, "I don't know
if it was a cruel joke on the staff photographers or what, but the editor started picking my photos over those of the other photographers."
